Here at The Carvonis Group (Miami, FL), we’re always looking for new ways to improve our networking skills, and everyone knows that one of the most important parts of networking and acquiring useful contacts is nailing the first impression. But it’s also no secret that making a good first impression can be pretty tricky and at times even nerve-wracking. Not to fear! We’ve got you covered with 4 tips that are sure to help you leave a great impression on every person that you meet.
1) Make eye contact
One of the biggest mistakes that people make during conversations is making too much or not enough eye contact. Eye contact shows that you’re engaged and that you care about what the other person is saying, so logically, not making enough eye contact with someone that you’re just meeting for the first time can send the wrong message. On the other hand, locking eyes with somebody for the entirety of a conversation can be a little creepy and unnerving for someone who barely knows you.
2) Ask questions
Responding to what a person is saying with relevant questions shows you’re engaged and paying attention to them. Just make sure you’re listening intently so that you don’t ask something unrelated or redundant!
3) Dress professionally
Networking can happen 24/7, and while you don’t necessarily need to wear a three piece suit after hours and over the weekend, it’s a good idea to look generally put together at all times. This is especially crucial while you’re on the clock because you never know when or where you could run into a potential contact or a new client. Dressing professionally shows that you take yourself and your job seriously, which will ensure that other people also take you seriously.
4) Body language
A lot of emphasis is placed on the value of a good, firm handshake when it comes to making first impressions. While mastering the art of the handshake is certainly an a good idea, perhaps even more important is practicing good posture. Make sure that you’re standing upright and not slouching. Not only will you look confident, but you’re likely to feel a little more confident too!
