Few things are as important to us at The Carvonis Group as teaching our employees successful habits that will serve them in their careers. Goal-setting is a big one. As far as we’re concerned, it’s a crucial ingredient of success.
“The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.” –Bill Copeland
Here are some things that almost always go wrong when you don’t have clear goals:
1. The entire day goes by and you realize that all you’ve accomplished is drinking too much coffee and trying to wrangle your ever-growing inbox.
You see, without knowing where you’re ultimately heading, it’s nearly impossible to focus on the big rocks, your most important tasks. In the back of your mind, you probably know what you should be doing, but you don’t have the clarity of purpose that comes only from thoughtful planning and writing down your goals. You end up filling up all of your time with lots of odds and ends, usually just reacting to whatever seems most urgent. The result is that the crucial career-making moves never get made.
2. Instead of pushing even harder when there’s a challenge along the way, you call it quits early and just head to happy hour.
When you don’t have clear goals, you’re liable to be significantly demotivated by any setback. You don’t have a reason to keep going. Your excuses start to pile up and you procrastinate. You forget that there’s a reason (is there?) that the tough times are worth it. As we say regularly at The Carvonis Group, you won’t succeed until your goals become greater than whatever obstacles are in your way.
3. You have trouble making life plans and the people in your life start getting frustrated with you.
Whether it’s your significant other trying to talk about whether you have a future together, your buddy asking you to plan a trip him around the world, or your poor mom just wanting a satisfying answer to “What’s next for you?” — you’ve probably already discovered how useful it is to know what you want and what you’re capable of pulling off. Loved ones aside, if you’re just living life from moment to moment, you might miss out on the peace of mind that only comes from clarity. Take it from us, having goals helps you sleep better at night.
4. You never experience the immense satisfaction that comes from actually achieving a huge goal.
Anyone who has ever accomplished something really big in his or her life will tell you that there is no greater feeling. There is nothing like working for something and actually earning the success that you’ve desired and pushed for. People with clearly defined goals tend to live more fulfilled lives for this very reason.
There are so many successful habits worth building into your daily or weekly routine, but don’t let goal-setting be the one you skip… ever! For more motivation, tips, and tricks keep reading The Carvonis Group blog! Check back soon for a new post.
